Textual Criticism is a branch of literary criticism that is concerned with the identification and removal of transcription errors in the text of manuscripts. Given a manuscript copy (or many copies), but not the original document, the textual critic seeks to reconstruct the original text as closely as possible. The phrase lower criticism is used to contrast textual criticism from higher criticism; the latter is in fact an endeavour to establish the authorship, date, and place of composition of the original text, whereas the former, attempts to remove errors of interpretation creeping into the accuracy of translation or translating as closely as possible to the author’s original.
