Maitreyi Brahmana Samvad is a section found in the Brihadaranyaka upanishad. Named after Maitreyi, the wife of Sage Yajnavalkya, it contains sublime instructions on discovering the secret to immortality. Here we have the ideal couple, a husband-preceptor and a wife-disciple, both supremely qualified as teacher and student, having a dialogue on the means to gain ‘Amrutatvam’ or Immortality which constitutes the crux of this section. Yajnavalkya, the great sage, having fulfilled the responsibilities of a householder, wishes to live the life of a forest recluse. Before leaving he informs his wives of having created adequate provisions for them to live a good life. Maitreyi, who was predisposed towards spiritual matters, now wishes to know if all this wealth can bring her immortality. For any queries, please contact the author, Smt.
