The text institutes the identity of the Jiva and the infinite Reality using the technique of discrimination (Viveka) between the Seer (Drg) and the seen (drshya).
The logical thought development through the verses can be vividly perceived. The text begins with simple theories and progressively leads the student to lofty concepts. Finally, it concludes by negating the drshya, firmly establishing in the student the belief that the Drg alone is the non-dual Truth.
The book is also known as Vakya Sudha, the nectar of the Mahavakyas.
Authorship
A faction of scholars claim Swami Vidyaranya ji as the author, while another faction maintains that the authorship rests with Sri Adi Sankaracharya. Thus, the authorship of the text stands contested.
