Five-day Workshop on Conservation & Preservation of Manuscripts

The CIFSS and NMM places great importance on capacity building—training people in conservation and maintenance of manuscripts. Conservation workshops provide practical training on maintenance and storage of manuscripts. Any direct or indirect action on a damaged or undamaged manuscript or collection of manuscripts, for increasing their life is conservation. This can be Preventive or Curative.

Preventive conservation seeks to reduce the future risk of deterioration. It includes measures such as controlling the temperature and humidity of the storage area of manuscripts and regular inspection of the condition of the manuscript/collection.

Curative conservation is any direct action on the manuscript(s) to prevent active deterioration. For instance, fumigation of manuscript(s) infested with insects.

Eligible Participants: Manuscript custodians,  Library staff, Curators, Archivists & Scholars of Manuscriptology

Chandogya Upanishad Chapter Six & Guru Mahima

The Upanishads try to remove the basic cause of our sorrow in life. All sorrows are expression of the experience of limitation in the Self. Hence Brahma Vidya is the highest Knowledge which removes the illusion of the duality in the world. Chandogya Upanishad is one of the popular Upanishads in which the sixth chapter holds supreme importance because of the Mahavakya 'Tav Tvam Asi' enshrined in it. Instructing his son and disciple Shevtaketu, here Sage Uddalaka gives us the highest teaching of Oneness of the individual Self with the Self of all. Swami Abhedananda would explain this text with his illuminating, interesting and deep discourses.

In the divine environs of the pious Adi Sankara Nilayam (Maternal Birthplace of Sri Sankara), delegates will also get to revel in evening satsangs on ‘Guru Mahima’, wherein Swamiji will speak on the most important stotras like Guru Paduka Stotram, Guruvasthakam and Totakashtakam!

Do not miss this opportunity of listening to the rare combination of exceptional discourses on Vedanta as well as Bhakti, at the most sacred venue of Adi Sankara Nilayam!

The Advaita Vedanta Immersive is an opportunity for seekers to attain clarity and appreciation of essential and deep concepts of Advaita-vedānta in the span of one week. This year the text for study is the first sutra of the Brahmasūtra (jijñāsāsūtra).

For attending this programme, you should have been already introduced to Advaita-vedānta and must have studied at least a few basic texts of Advaita-vedānta like the Bhagavad-gītā (at least a few chapters), a few Upaniṣads and some prakaraṇa-granthas. Knowledge of Sanskrit is not compulsory though it will be advantageous.

The one week program consists of lectures, time for personal reflection, discussion groups, doubt clarification sessions, and demonstrating the understood concepts through written samples and meditation. These written samples are checked by facilitators and returned to the students. The pedagogy is the triple means of śravaṇa, manana and nididhyāsana.

The Mahabharata rightly declares: Gītā sugītā kartavyā kimanyaiḥ śāstravistaraiḥ – If you master the Bhagavad Gita, what is the need for a pile of Scriptures?” This is justly so for the timeless message of the Bhagavad Gita that was given by Lord Krishna to Arjuna in the battlefield of life is the very essence of all the scriptures – the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Mahabharata and so on. Immensely practical and thus the most popular of the scriptural texts through the millenia the Bhagavad Gita is an unparalleled self-transformation tool. Mastering the wisdom of the Gita one truly masters the mind, life and the world.
