Hari Om,

In the last discouse these references came up. But there was no elaboration.

जहि शत्रुं महाबाहो कामरूपं दुरासदम् |

For the very important task of overcoming desires - how to apply Sama, Dana, Danda & Bheda?

Is it possible at all for deep rooted desires? Share your experience if you have had success.

Hari om. In a way , I think yes, it is possible if I am willing to control my mind. Sama-- I must educate my mind by saying that before fulfilling the desire (perhaps for an object),think if it is really necessary to possess it. If it is a need It is OK .otherwise ,if my desire is just a Fancy or just because somebody has it and I should also have it, better nip it then and there. With this, if my mind does does not listen to me, then Dana--if you stop desiring it you will have some incentive (like place which would have been occupied by the object, or unnecessary maintenance of the object ,or getting a lot of time to do better things which
otherwise would have been wasted etc,etc),. Still if the mind is adamant ,then Bheda-I show the mind people who are happier without such possessions, and without such desires.Start scolding the mind ' can't you learn from those successful people?'. Still if the mind insists , then,Danda--punish the mind by depriving from getting its usual quota of....,anything good that I usually do for either my physical health or talking to someone dear to me etc etc which makes me happy. Actually the last one Danda automatically happens because of the already agitated mind. But the best way is to understand the shlokas 62. 63. of the 2nd ch to its core and educate the mind properly with the spiritual goal in sight. This is just my way of thinking. Hari om.

When we start trying to implement control of our desires, if we start with the toughest ones, then it is easy to get discouraged to see ourselves fall short of the ideal.

In my opinion, we need to start with small and simple things first like getting up early in the morning, eating healthy, not eating too much sweet, not going for window shopping just because we are bored, gossiping on the phone, exercising etc just to name a few.

As an example, I’ll take the getting up in the morning one. In general I am a reasonably early riser but it wasn’t on a consistent basis to study. I tried and failed many times and each time I had a really good excuse why I was justified in doing so. Then as the day passes on, things of the world come upon me and there was not much time left for study. The solution was very simple, just get up, but the mind would not agree no matter how hard I tried. Endless reasons followed such as: I have so much to do, I am so tired, I do so much so its ok if I watch TV till late in the night or its my time and I need to have some entertainment, kids and their things to be dealt with etc etc. With such justified reasons, how could I possibly get up!

Then I attended one camp last year and the Swamiji said to reflect upon “What is the strength of your decision?”. As you think and reflect upon it, you become more alert and aware to how/what you are thinking and what is blocking your path to controlling your behavior – sense’s indulgence, mind’s talk and not listening to your own intellect even though you know what the right thing to do is. Each day as we find success in controlling either the senses or mind or intellect, our resolve is increased and that cycle continues and as we implement in smaller things our will power gets strengthened.

Then sometimes even though we know intellectually all that we need to do and yet the desire cannot be controlled, then we have to take the help of the Higher. Just like when we need to get a job done, going to the office clerk (mind) versus going to the General Manager (God) who has more influence to speed up the process, if we petition the Lord directly, the road blocks get cleared faster.

Then as we find small successes in this endeavor we have to watch out or else we can get smug and complacent. In this case, it is easy to fall back to our old ways or habits since it is not fully rooted within. As Swamiji said – ‘Quiet, Alert and Vigilant mind is the key’. We have to cultivate the virtue of alertness as is given in our “Listen..Reflect..Apply”.

Also if one of the habits we cultivate is Karma Yoga, clearly alertness becomes easier, road blocks seem to melt away and as we practice our will power increases to keep on the path because you see the benefits of such a lifestyle change which then leads automatically to increased faith. This leads us out of the vicious cycle (ladder of fall) into a virtuous spiral (Iswara Arpana Buddhi & Prasada Buddhi) upward.

Using methods like Sama, dana, danda etc may work for some time but by consistently using the knowledge of the scriptures and reflecting and steadily applying it and not giving up and improving our thought/habit patterns one at a time and filling it with Karma Yoga is a sure way to end our ignorance based actions.

Thank you Radharani ji for the elaborate answer. I tend to agree with your answer. You have expanded on the first answer of Leela ji (BTW that should have been posted as a reply instead of comment so it could possibly be accepted as an answer).

I think it is tough to get rid of a negative habit than to cultivate a new habit. My question was for controlling desires born out of habit of mind which leads you to act impulsively. The situation is mentioned quite nicely by verse 11.29 (यथा प्रदीप्तं ज्वलनं पतङ्गा) - like the moth rushing to the fire. I think the uncontrolled mind can make you do extreme things.

There is no shortcut to it and you have to exercise your will-power. You have elaborated the process more and I accept it. The challenge is how to increase the time between your thoughts generated by desires and action leading to fulfillment of it happens almost involuntarily. Once you are consumed, like the moth, there is no looking back. Knowledge seems to vanish, forget about applying it.

This also brings to me next question - more in the next post.

Hari om Manoharji. I just saw yr comment that I should have posted a reply instead of a comment for it to be accepted as an answer. I never knew this. Moreover, I am not used to operating the gadgets like computer and as such I just saw the add comment box and just went on replying. Anyway , not that it matters but I just want to know the difference. How and why does it matter? Am I going to lose something by writing in the comment box? If so where do i find the reply box in case I want to reply for any question at any other time? And what are those points being shown for some ? Kindly enlighten me. Pranams .

Clean bowled. Not even an LBW or a catch. That's how my struggles with desire have been. Initially they were all about suppression like that sloka on hypocrisy said. More informed efforts also ended with utter failure, some due to just momentary lapses! None of Saama, Daana, Danda, Bhed those have worked reliably, not individually, not in a combination.

At this point, the last sloka of Chapter 3 has most appeal i.e There is no way to go past desire without knowing the Self. However, given that I only have right to action now, Ishwarapanam and Ishwaraprasada is the only thing to keep improving upon - Stay focused on Lord and Lord alone.

That reminds me of this story about Sage Narada:
Once Kaama deva tried to entice Sage Narada but could not. So, Sage Narada went to Lord Shiva to tell this victory. Lord Shiva complimented him but also told him not to speak about it to Hari (Lord Vishu)!

Now Sage Narada thought Lord Shiva was jealous and so did not want him to tell Hari. So, he goes to Hari and tells Him anyway. Hari simply smiled. That disappointed Sage Narada who now starting thinking, in some aspects, he was better than even Hari!

So he goes to Prithvi loka where he thought he will get more recognition. The story goes on to tell how Sage Narada fell for a King's daughter, asked Hari for a face like Hari to attend her swayamwara but was blessed with a face of a monkey instead! At that time, Sage Narada realized this was done by Hari and so cursed Him.

However, all this was an illusion by Hari to keep Sage Narada from straying away from the right path! Once that illusion was revealed, Sage Narada came back to his senses. However, his curse was accepted by Hari and was the reason where He took the help of Vanaras in another Avatar!

Hari Om!

As Grihastas,controlling the mind is a Herculean task. No matter how much we try,somewhere the devil creeps in.We need to pray before our Guru and God to give us the strength to control the desire and control the mind and senses. Mere abstinence brings more craving. Hence the scriptural advice-to desire for a higher ideal. In the quest for that higher goal, the lower desire automatically dissolves. It is a difficult path.But everyday we should at least advance by at least a millimeter.
