Swamiji had mentioned about Goodness and Intelligence in the context of Duryodhana talking to his Guru Dronacharya (V1.7-V1.10). His expression of thoughts was not really helpful and it brought out his real nature that could not remain hidden for long. He had intended to size up his Guru since he had taught all of them Kauravas and Pandavas and many others and Duryodhana felt in his heart that Drona is not with the Kauravas.

Duryodhana was intelligent but not righteous whereas the Pandavas always followed Dharma, the greatest of Cosmic laws which is universal, timeless and no one can escape it. Pandavas may have appeared to be weak but following Dharma, they and goodness prevailed.

Therefore he said
if Goodness+Intelligence go together, there will be success.
Even if Intelligence is not there, success will come perhaps later.

Since our life is a continuum and not begins at birth and ends at death so we need to always align ourselves with Dharma and use it as a compass to navigate the ocean of life and if we cultivated intelligence it would make Dharma’s job easier.

Duryodhana aligned with adharma so it was a sure recipe for failure.
You can hear more in the Discourse 5 video.
Thanks,
Radha
