It requires an understanding of quantum physics to get a glimpse of the mind boggling nature of time and space. If you were not familiar with the deeper and subtle aspects of time and space, then you should start learning quantum physics as a first step. Then the scriptural statements explaining Maya will slowly percolate if studied with Sraddha. An unconditioned mind cannot grasp these concepts. There are many paths using which a person can try to raise the ability of his mind to grasp the concepts of Maya.
e.g. refer to the 7th sloka of Nasadiya Sooktam. A conditioned spiritual mind will be able to grasp the meaning of the preceding six slokas while an unconditioned mind will be left pondering at the question mark in the seventh sloka.
i॒yaṃ visṛ॑ṣṭi॒ryata॑ āba॒bhūva॒ yadi॑ vā da॒dhe yadi॑ vā॒ na ।
yo a॒syādhya॑kṣaḥ para॒me vyo॑ma॒nso a॒ṅga ve॑da॒ yadi॑ vā॒ na veda॑ ॥ 7॥
Whence all creation had its origin,
he, whether he fashioned it or whether he did not,
he, who surveys it all from highest heaven,
he knows - or maybe even he does not know.
A person who wants to understand the concept of Maya, should be looking to find the Truth which is concealed by the veil of Maya. Think beyond Maya, then you may understand Maya.
'That from which these beings are born, that by which, when born, these beings live, that into which they enter upon departing, That you should know' - Taittiriya Upanishad 3.1.1

For a gross answer to your question, consider this. Isnt everything that occurs around your happening during the progress of time? And is not everything visible as existing, present in space. Both these are unreal as is the created world (Brahma Satyam Jagat Mithya, Jivo Brahmaiva naparah). Maya is illusory and uses time, space and other aids to conceal the True knowledge.

Hari Om!

Tattvabodha explains the evolution the great elements (Space, air, fire, water, earth) from Maya - In short, Maya is the three Gunas Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. Out of those came these 5 subtle elements which get mixed to form the 5 gross elements out of which the body is made.

For time, in explaining Avatar Rahasya, Swamiji explained Yuga i.e. the period of time for either Satya, Treta, Dvapar or Kali-- Compare that to Avatar Rahasya in that God is not born nor does He die but His Maya simply changes form --- Putting them together implies time is in the realm of Maya.

There was another way (i can't find reference to the exact scripture) --- Time is just thought - It starts on waking up when the thought of "I am" occurs - In that sense too, mind is made of those subtle great elements and so time, as a product of mind, is also Maya. In other words, when seeing a mountain, it is not the mountain which goes into the mind, but the image of the mountain is what is perceived. Same with time.

Swami Vivekananda said in Jyanyoga (Chapter XI, The Cosmos)- The seed i.e.the cause lies dormant, un-manifest and then when the time comes (pardon the irony but language is limited), it takes the gross form of the tree- the effect. The effect- the gross form of tree, again goes back to the cause-the seed. He quotes Sage Kapila that there is really no difference in cause and the effect and destruction is actually going back to the cause. Yat Pinde, Tat Brihamande...like wise the universe lies unmanifest, dormant in a seed universe, which comes from the previous manifestation. When the times comes, the manifestation happens and when then again the universe goes to the subtle, unmanifest, nebulous form (the singularity in modern astrophysics) in a period of dormancy. Thus it appears that what we call creation and destruction-are really cycles of manifestation and unmanifestation, change of forms or may be appearance in this dimension and (dis) appearance into another. This is one consideration as far as creation itself is concerned i.e. it is marely a change of form and the forms themselves are finite and therefore unreal.

Then there is the idea of space- call it the singularity before the big bang in astrophysical language or the seed universe in spiritual language but both seem to be devoid of space as we no it and space seem to come into existence only at the point of 'creation' or manifestation. The same can be extrapolated to time as well.
