Generally we see that Brahmopadesam is performed to a male child and thereafter he becomes a Brahmachari. He is then asked to perform Ssndya Vandanam and chant the Gayatri Mantra thrice a day. However, he is not introduced to the meaning of the Mantras unless he being a bright child, on his own. tries to understand through Google or whatever.

If such a child is introduced to the Gita and is advised to do all action as worship to god without expecting results and the child shows interests and intentions, will doing Sandya Vandanam without knowing the meaning be beneficial or following Gita will be more beneficial to the child.

In my opinion doing sandhya vandanam by a child without knowing its meaning is a samskara to the child after Brahmopadesam. It will inculcate chitra shuddhi and on a later stage chitra ekagrata. But studying the Bhagavad Gita, the child will have more clarity about karma and karma yoga and he will start performing his action without karma phalan, totally devoted karma and thus he will have no expectations after doing sandhya vandanam and thus can practice karma yoga from childhood. Regards

My 2 cents ..
For children, to learn the discipline of doing Sandhya Vandanam everyday and creating the right habits from the very beginning is very important. First the discipline of the doing it everyday not just when it is convenient comes, despite obstacles and several reasons that can be given why we cannot do it today. Then as that habit gets set, if the child is interested in knowing the meaning, Chinmaya Mission has booklets on Gayathri Mantra (I think..) or Sw.SwaroopanandaJi's CD that can be heard to understand its meaning.

Doing Sandhya Vandanam and practicing concepts from B'Gita are not mutually exclusive and need not be viewed as something that should be done as a choice of one or the other. As 2nd chapter points out, whatever we do it is the attitude behind the action that matters more. So doing the best morning puja with all care and our full attention, not as a matter of routine or something that is being done because it has to be done, would be practicing BG in itself.

Hope this helps.

Rituals are also important to begin with as they increase one's faith and leads to chitta shuddhi but if one understands the meaning of any ritual and purpose then usefulness is increased nevertheless it is not a waste as in Bhagavad Gita later emphasizes that no karma is wasted and if you serve the devas and higher beings they will bless you and your society as well.
