In chapter 4 Bhagavan prescribes 12 yajnas. Are those 12 yajnas must be done to reach step #2 which is Brahma sakshatkara or can one
do whatever he/she capable of doing and still reach there. Can one get the chitta shuddhi by doing one or two of them?

Hari Om.

From verse 4.32 (एवं बहुविधा यज्ञा .. ब्रह्मणो मुखे। कर्मजान्विद्धि), these different Yagnas are prescribed by Vedas (for different people).

In the commentary of the verses for Yagnas, you will see "some Yogis" perform particular Yagna while "others" perform other type of Yagna. It is according to your varnaasrama /
temparement. So Jnani may just perform (स्वाध्यायज्ञानयज्ञाश्च) while Kriya Yogi may perform Ashtanga Yoga (यतयः संशितव्रताः) [4.28].

Verse 5.5 says (यत्सांख्यैः प्राप्यते स्थानं तद्योगैरपि गम्यते।), That place which is reached by the Sankhyas or the Jnanis is reached by the Yogis (Karma Yogis).

However it is important that we should perform these Yagnas in the spirit of Karma Yoga, else we diminish these same actions to mundane activities and get entangled.

So performing any of the Yagnas intelligently (Karma Yoga) will result in Chitta Shuddhi. Also Brahma Sakshatkar would be the last step in the process.

Hari om Hemalathaji
By performing these 12 yagnas one will neither get Brahma Sakshatkara nor chitta shuddi. These 12 yagnas will help us the integration of our mind and intellect. To get mastery over our mind.To gain self control. We can get chitta shuddhi by practising karma yoga alone. That is work without expectations and with complete acceptance.Swamiji gave us 12 steps for Brahma Sakshatkara.Chitta Shuddhi is only second step. The other 10 steps alone will lead us to liberation and not these 12 yagnas. For example the 12th yagna is 'apare niyatahara'. this is having control over food.By practising this yagna one will not get chitta shuddhi. We will get control over 'rasa' aspect. Slowly we have to get control over shabda, sparsha, roopa, rasa and gandha also.By practising 'swadhyaya yagna' one can become a scholar or pandit.not gnani.
These yagnas will clean the existing wrong impression in our mind which will hasten our progress. One can choose one or two or all depending upon their capacity. But by practising the12 yagnas ALONE
[one or two or all] one will not get either chitta suddhi or liberation.

Hari Om! If karta bhav (thought that "i am the doer") exists, any righteous action can be performed with Karma Yoga attitude .

However, these 12 yajnas are for a sadhaka who had done Karma Yoga, has some chitta suddhi, is aware he/she is not the karta but has not yet resolved all names and forms into that supreme reality. To put it simply, Sadhaka thinks "I am not the doer" but "what about the other"? So, these 12 are given to gain Jnana about Samyak Darshan (right vision that everything is Brahman) --

Of these 12, the first (Daiva Yajna) was talked about in Karma Yoga also. Here, it is representative of the other 11 with the second being the highest. So reaching the second is where the path leads

To take an example, in the Yajna talking about wealth or breathing, if the thinking is "I am earning wealth or doing breathing" then Karma Yoga should be done to get to the point that "I am not the one working to earn that wealth, it is not mine but Lord's, I am witness of breathing etc." - Only after that the 12 Yajnas come into play - for e.g. "breath in or out and breather is the same Brahman, or wealth, earner, action of earning, place reached is all Brahman" etc.

Lastly, Swamiji said Guru Kripa is there, so just keep walking on the path, where-ever you are, just don't stop! Perform some Yajnas or all, whatever the urge is.
