Hari Om,

We have seen in a recent discussion that will-power can be used to exercise restraint on the mind and seems important virtue to cultivate.

Yet it is not mentioned in Shat-Sampatti or object of Sadhana. Is it referred by a different term in scriptures?

तितिक्षा (titiksha) - forbearance comes close but still I think is the quality of the mind. Will-power seems beyond the mind.

I would like to know more about this and how to cultivate it.

Thank You for the question ManoharJi. This helped me to clarify my thoughts as well. I have used 2 books here - Self Unfoldment and Tattva Bodha and identified chapters for everyone's convenience.

From Self-Unfoldment (chapter: Values)
• All people of great achievement have had the blessing of tremendous will power.
• Strong will is developed by the ability to live up to one’s intellectual convictions and to act in harmony with them. When we live in the spirit of our intellectual convictions, we live in Truthfulness or Satyam.
• Only the intellect has the capacity to keep our values and ideals in place despite all external challenges. When our ideals are allowed to be broken, by our own weakness of mind, we compromise and live a life of dishonesty (asatyam). This compromise causes a split in the personality and we become cowardly in the face of life’s challenges. Secret of Success is to keep the head above the storms of the heart(mind).
Harmony comes as a result of two processes: Discrimination – Viveka and Dispassion – Vairagya. The shat sampati helps a seeker to gain control of the mind. (Chapter: ‘Sadhana’)
(From Tattva Bodha) Sama is control or mastery of the mind. Mind is a continuous flow of thoughts. Thoughts are innumerable in number. Each thought by itself is flimsy but total force of the mind is terrific. It prompts us to perform various actions and can be stubborn, unyielding, agitated and distracted. Alertness & Vigilance and not participating in the thoughts gives us control of the mind. Dama, process of training the senses, aids in the control of the mind.
• Each of the Viveka, Vairagya, Sama, Dama, Uparama, Titiksha, Shraddha & Samadhana, works towards control of the mind and leads us to feel the need to free ourselves from all limitations and find a permanent solution and this desire is Mumuksutvam.
( From Self Unfoldment: ‘Mind’) Mind is a flow of thoughts and emotions and intellect is thoughts as ideas and decisions that directs the thoughts. To train the mind to think right, we need to introspect, detect, negate and substitute.
(From Self Unfoldment: ‘Vasanas’) As our vasanas, so our thoughts, and as our thoughts so our actions. If we change our thoughts, we can improve our lives. 3 methods to effect change in thoughts - reduce the quantity of thoughts, improve the quality of thoughts and change the direction of thought flow implying path of Karma, Bhakti and Jnana Yoga.

• So we now come a full circle back to Swamiji’s talks and the 12 step process he had laid out which starts with Karma Yoga and leads to Chitta Shuddhi, purification of mind and then Sadhana Chatushtaya etc. The first step itself is Karma Yoga which is the key to opening the magical door of controlling, rather purifying, the mind.

In conclusion, it seemed that will power is not just Titiksha (endurance) but the process of reducing the gap between the mind and the intellect.
