This series of talks were a part of the Summer School ‘The Word & The World’ organized by the Chinmaya International Foundation in collaboration with Manipal University in July 2015.
The lectures introduce the fundamental concepts of the philosophy of language with the focus on discursive, logical and analytical side of the Indian philosophical tradition. Starting from Yāska to Bhatṛhari in grammar tradition, from Gautama to Gadādhara in Nyāya tradition, the concepts of verbal testimony included worldviews from a great range of philosophical schools like Nyāya-vaiśeṣika, Sāṅkhya-yoga, Bauddha, Jaina, Mimāmsā and Vedānta. The lectures unfold various strands of the ‘word and object’ relationship with a comparative outlook of western schools.
