The Bhagavad Gita, the Lord’s song, is a dialogue between Lord Sri Krishna and Pandava Prince Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra.
The seventeenth chapter ‘Shraddhatraya-vibhaga Yoga’ opens with Arjuna’s doubt: Is it sufficient if one lives with faith a life of good conduct and noble aspirations, or is it necessary that one must also know the shastras and implicitly obey the injunctions laid therein? Arjuna also seeks to know from the Lord the nature of the faith of these people who try to live a religious life to the best of their knowledge – is it sattva, rajas or tams? To this, the Lord replies that faith is ascertained by one’s inherent nature (svabhava). This can be determined from man’s physical indulgences (ahara), dedicated activities (yajna), self-denials (tapas), and charities (dana). From a close study of this chapter, we can direct our activities away from the influences of the lower urges and guide our spiritual practices consistently on the royal path of sure success.
